On Friday July 8th, 2022, CBICI made an excursion to Goat Island in Eskasoni. The group Included 12 international students from different countries, keen to learn the history and culture of Unama'ki.

Shubhi is an international student attending Cape Breton University, in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Business Management program. She is from Gurgaon, a city near New Delhi, India, and was a business owner before arriving in Canada – she had three businesses back home. One day she realized that she wanted to move to a new place, and during her research to decide where she wanted to move, she saw the beautiful landscapes, water, and greenery of Cape Breton Island, and said “this is where I want to go.”

We stand with the Sipekne’katik First Nation and the Mi’kmaq asserting their Treaty Rights in Nova Scotia (unceded Mi’kma’ki) to pursue a moderate livelihood through a self-regulated fishery.

We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement in Canada and the United States, and support the call for fundamental systemic and individual change.

Although our doors may be closed, our staff continue to support, connect, advocate on behalf of, and otherwise meet the needs of newcomers to Cape Breton — virtually!

Our team has been working to provide international students with up-to-date information during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Cape Breton Island, there is no shortage of artistic talent. The Highland Arts Theatre provides a space for artists and community members to gather.
